Brookfield has a growing presence throughout the Asia Pacific region. We started our operations in Australia with the acquisition of Multiplex, an international contractor and developer of real estate assets, in 2008. The following year, we expanded our Australia business with the recapitalization and subsequent acquisition of Babcock and Brown Infrastructure, which included Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal in Queensland, one of the largest coal exporting ports in the world. In 2012, we acquired Thakral Group, an Australian real estate company with a portfolio of hotels, retail and commercial properties and development projects.
In India, we have acquired high quality infrastructure and real estate assets since establishing operations there in 2009. In 2014, we executed the largest commercial real estate transaction in India at the time, acquiring a 15 million square foot portfolio of office properties. In the last two years, we purchased a portfolio of six toll roads, totaling 246 km of roadway, and a majority stake in a cell phone tower network.
We have had operations in China since 2014 when we became a cornerstone investor in China Xintiandi (CXTD), an owner of premier office and retail assets in Shanghai.
