Corporate Social Responsibility

Throughout our history, we have learned that acting responsibly toward our stakeholders is fundamental to operating a productive, profitable business. It is for this reason that we embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles across our operations and pursue philanthropic initiatives that  strengthen our foundations in the communities in which we do business. These efforts help us ensure that our business model is sustainable well into the future. 

Our Principles

The following principles and associated practices ensure that we manage our investments with integrity, balancing economic goals with good corporate citizenship.

  • Environmental Stewardship: Identify ways to minimize our environmental impact, utilizing in-house experts and specialist consultants as necessary.
  • Employee Well-Being: Meet or exceed all applicable labor laws and standards in jurisdictions in which we operate, which includes respecting human rights, offering competitive wages, providing safe work environments, and implementing non-discriminatory hiring practices that are fully inclusive. We also aim to have zero serious safety incidents within all portfolio companies and assets by following a robust set of health and safety practices across the global real estate platform.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with community groups potentially affected by our actions to ensure that their interests are appropriately integrated into our decisions.
  • Governance, Ethics & Fairness: Operate with high ethical standards by conducting business activities in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements and our Code of Business Conduct and Ethics.
  • Corporate Citizenship: Empower our employees to participate in, and use our resources to give back to, the communities in which we operate.
  • Transparency: Be accessible to our investors, responsive to requests for information and timely in our communications.

Environmental Stewardship

We demonstrate respect for the natural environment and take steps to protect it by managing biodiversity, investing in green technologies, employing environmentally sound construction methods, and implementing strategies to minimize our carbon footprint. Our commitment to sustainability and intelligent design has earned us global recognition.

  • Managing Biodiversity, U.K.

    Our U.K. short-break holiday operator, Center Parcs, partners with local Wildlife Trusts to monitor, maintain and enhance wildlife and woodlands. Forest management plans are implemented to measure performance and conservation strategies are shared with guests. In 2010, Wildlife Trusts recognized Center Parcs’ superb management of biodiversity and woodlands with the Biodiversity Benchmark award.

  • Sustainable Design & LEED Certified Buildings

    We implement cutting-edge LEED technologies to maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impacts at the built-to-suit facilities developed by our industrial platform, IDI Gazeley. Examples include highly specialized building systems and advanced landscaping techniques to minimize effects on the surrounding areas. The majority of construction and demolition waste from project sites is re-used or recycled.

  • Green Residential Initiatives, U.S.

    Our multifamily development partner, Fairfield Residential, equips its Living Green apartment communities with water-saving technologies, including low-flow toilets, showers and faucet aerators. Energy and waste reduction is supported by the use of motion detectors, solar heating for pools, dual-pane windows, recycling facilities and on-site carpooling programs.

  • Green Office Credentials

    Our green office credentials include 59 BOMA 360 (“Building Owners and Managers Association”) certifications, 46 LEED certifications and 41 Energy Star certifications. Among our eligible Australian office properties, 95% have received NABERS Water and Base Building ratings, and 87% of our global office portfolio holds some type of sustainability designation. We are a member of the Green Building Council in the U.S., Canada and Australia, and an annual respondent to the GRESB.

Employee Well-Being

Because our employees are integral to our success, our management teams maintain high standards with respect to employee welfare. Safety training and protocols are constantly refined, and health and safety incident metrics are reviewed regularly. Our goal is to have zero serious safety incidents within all portfolio companies by following a set of health and safety principles that are applied across the global properties businesses.

Community Building

We believe that giving back is essential to doing good business. Across our operations in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Europe, Asia and Australia, we enhance our communities by supporting cultural initiatives and hosting local events, and we encourage our business partners to do the same.

  • Arts Brookfield

    Brookfield helps invigorate public spaces by offering free cultural experiences in our office buildings around the world. We commission, produce and present world-class works of art through Arts Brookfield, which supports the fields of dance, music, theater, film and visual art. Arts Brookfield has featured more than 5,000 artists throughout its 25 year history of award-winning events and programs.

  • Respecting our Heritage

    Four heritage-listed buildings, built between 1910 and 1936, were carefully restored to form the façade of Brookfield Place Perth, a bold commercial district in the heart of Perth, Australia. Brookfield Place Perth reflects the skillful integration of historic buildings with stunning contemporary architecture, vibrant public spaces, and exciting shopping, dining and entertainment venues. The initial project was completed in 2012, and a second tower was built in 2015.

  • Veterans Housing Initiative

    At our multifamily buildings in Manhattan, the Veterans Housing Initiative offers significant discounts to military veterans returning from overseas deployment and re-entering civilian life. Qualifying veterans and their families are eligible for free rent during the first month of their lease, as well as sharply reduced or waived security deposits and discounts on moving and living expenses.


We believe that making a positive contribution to our local communities is a fundamental responsibility. Brookfield has a history of deep involvement in philanthropy and we continually work to instill a culture of charitable giving and volunteerism among our employees and business partners. 

  • Symphony Orchestra, Brazil
    In Brazil, where we have operated for more than 100 years, we have established a reputation of partnering with arts, environmental, health and educational charities. Two of our well-established philanthropic partnerships are with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, which we have supported since 2000, and Lecca, a program that has provided educational assistance to children from low-income communities for almost a decade.
  • Local Initiatives

    We encourage our employees to volunteer in their communities and provide opportunities to do so within the workplace as well. We contribute our time and financial resources to a variety of organizations with which we have standing partnerships, including Habitat for Humanity, Make-a-Wish, Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation, the Special Olympics and the American Heart Association. 

Governance and Ethics 

Upholding fair and effective business practices is a cornerstone of being a responsible global citizen. Across Brookfield, we have adopted strong governance practices to ensure our activities are conducted with the utmost honesty and integrity and in full compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. Brookfield’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics sets out the commitments expected by Brookfield. We believe this is critical to maintaining the confidence of our customers, investors and investees.

Brookfield maintains a reporting hotline to report suspected unethical, illegal or unsafe behavior in English and other languages. The reporting hotline can be accessed online or by jurisdiction as noted in the Code of Conduct.
