We have a significant presence in South America through our investments in real estate, renewable power, infrastructure, and private equity, which span four countries.
In Brazil, where we have been investing for more than 100 years, we are one the largest investors in real assets, with $23 billion in assets under management across 15 states. We own an interest in a number of key assets across the country, including Arteris, a concession of nine toll roads, VLI, an integrated logistics solutions company and BRK Ambiental, a waste and water treatment facility. We also own a number of commercial and retail properties in the country, including a portfolio of seven high-end, prime commercial properties in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, acquired in 2015. In 2017, we acquired the largest private water and wastewater company operating municipal water and sewage systems serving 15 million people.
We have had a presence in Chile since 2006 when we acquired Transelec, the largest electricity transmission system in the country, and in 2013 we expanded our platform there with the acquisition of a toll road network. In 2011 we began operations in Colombia with the acquisition of an electrical distribution business, and in 2016 acquired Isagen S.A., one of Colombia’s largest power generation companies. The same year we acquired a 57% stake in Rutas de Lima, a road concession in Peru.
