Investing in Brazil over time
1899
Canadian investors found São Paulo Tramway, Light & Power Co. introducing electric streetcars in São Paulo and Rio. By 1940, “The Light” employs 50,000 and supplies most of Brazil’s electricity.
1969–2000s
Operated under the Brascan name, maintaining a longstanding presence in Brazil while evolving the business through portfolio repositioning and strategic investments, laying the groundwork for future expansion in the country.
2012–2014
Acquired controlling stakes in Arteris and VLI, establishing a significant presence in transportation infrastructure and logistics through long-term highway concession assets, rail, port, and integrated logistics networks nationwide.
2015–2017
Entered wind energy in Rio Grande do Norte, acquired NTS in Brazil’s Southeast region, and made first power transmission investments through Quantum, expanding across renewable and regulated energy infrastructure assets.
2018–2019
Made first investments in digital infrastructure through Ascenty and expanded private equity portfolio with BRK Ambiental and Ouro Verde, adding exposure to sanitation and fleet management platforms with scalable, long-duration cash flow profiles.
2020
Entered the solar energy sector with an investment in a project in Ceará, broadening renewable capabilities and reinforcing commitment to sustainable power generation across Brazil’s diverse and growing energy markets.
2021
Acquired four AAA office buildings on Faria Lima Avenue, entered the multifamily sector, and acquired Aldo Solar, expanding across prime office, residential platforms, and distributed solar equipment and services in Brazil.
2022
Acquired 12 office buildings across São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasília, scaling presence in prime markets. Acquired Unidas’ rent-a-car division, expanding mobility services through a diversified national platform.
2023
Expanded into distributed generation with the acquisition of IVI Energia and acquired a portfolio of nine logistics parks nationwide, strengthening energy capabilities and logistics real estate scale across key markets.
2024–2026
Expanded the multifamily portfolio through retrofit and greenfield projects in high-demand residential neighborhoods São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Acquired Tabas, a multifamily management platform.
