Investing in the U.S. over time
1980s
Brookfield began acquiring hydroelectric dams in key regions across the United States, largely from industrial sellers in traditional industries that were on the decline. These facilities produce clean, dependable power for their communities and formed the basis for Brookfield’s modern-day leadership in the energy sector.
2001
Following the 9/11 terror attacks, some investors believed Lower Manhattan would never recover. But Brookfield decided to increase its investment in the heavily damaged World Financial Center and surrounding Battery Park City. Today, Brookfield Place is a center of commerce in New York.
2008–2016
Launched public affiliates for each of Brookfield’s investment strategies, listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange. The affiliates broadened access to our strategies for public markets investors and have grown to a combined market capitalization today of more than $100 billion.

Acquired a majority stake in leading alternative investment manager Oaktree Capital. We announced our acquisition of the remaining interest in Oaktree in 2025.

202
Listed our alternative asset management business. The new Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) offers investors a pure-play, asset-lite alternative asset management business with a focused management team.
2025
Launched a dedicated AI Infrastructure strategy with the aim of deploying up to $100 billion of investment in partnership with NVIDIA. The strategy draws together Brookfield’s unique capabilities across real estate, infrastructure and energy to deliver end-to-end solutions under one roof.
